According to a report from The Pulse of Radio, Dave Grohl attempted to keep iconic New York recording studio, The Magic Shop, open. This is the place in which Foo Fighters recorded “I Am A River” for the Sonic Highways album and documentary.
The report notes that The Magic Shop’s founder Steve Rosenthal was in a lengthy rent increase battle with the landlord of the building in which the studio was housed. Grohl, to his credit, attempted to financially back Rosenthal’s efforts.

Unfortunately, the building’s co-op board rejected this Grohl-assisted proposal. Now, the studio will close on March 16.

In addition to Foo Fighters, The Magic Shop was also the place where David Bowie recorded his final two albums.

Said Rosenthal in statement given to The New York Times: “As the city becomes more of a corporate and condo island, some of us wish for a better balance between money and art, between progress and preservation, and we hope that one day we will see a reversal of the destruction of conscience and community we are witnessing.”
