Neil Young Thought Florence Welch Was a Man

On June 2, Florence + The Machine will finally give us How Big How Blue How Beautiful,  the band’s third album and first since 2011’s Ceremonials.

Before the world received word that this album was on the way, Florence Welch performed at Neil Young’s annual Bridge School Benefit Concert back in October 2014. In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Welch was asked if she got to meet Young at the event, to which she responded: “Yeah. He’s got such incredible energy.”

However, Young made quite the hilarious admission to her as they spoke.

Recalled Welch: “He said that when he first heard my record, he thought that I was a man with a high voice [laughs]. He was like, ‘I live in the mountains. I don’t know much media. I just thought you were a man called Florence.’ And I was like, ‘Hey, that’s pretty punk.’ ” I was like, ‘Thanks, Neil. Thank you so much.'”
