Share

In today’s Getting to Know, we meet Islander, a Christian Nu Metal act that gets by with a little help from prayer, as well as Hulk Hogan. If you are in an up and coming band that would like to partake in a Getting to Know feature, contacteditor@riffyou.com to receive the questionnaire and instructions. Thanks!

islanderBand Name: Islander
Band Members: Andrew Murphy (guitar), Mikey Carvajal (vocals), Eric Frazier (drums), and
 Chris Doot (bass).
Years Active: 3
City of Origin: Greenville, SC.

Who are you and what do you do?

“My name is Mikey and I am vocals for Islander.”

In 100 words or less, tell us how your band has gotten to this point.

“Hard work, a Facebook message, and the grace of God.”

What is your latest release and how would you best describe it to someone who hasn’t heard your band?

Violence & Destruction is the name of the record, and I would just say that it’s honest rock music that doesn’t follow gimmicks.”

When making an album, which aspect of the process do you put the most time into and why?

“I personally put the most time into writing lyrics. It’s stressful for me.”

What is the best part about your band and why?

“I would say our live show. It may have its mistakes sometimes, but at least we aren’t using backing tracks for guitars and vocals like so many bands do nowadays. Art should be a reflection of life, and life isn’t perfect either.”

What makes your band unique from the rest?

“Probably that no other band is made up of the same individuals as the ones that make up Islander.”

How does your band survive the challenges of touring/gigging?

“Prayer, grace, forgiveness, communication, and Hulk Hogan.”

Would you rather be critically-acclaimed; rich and famous; or an under-the-radar band with a dedicated fan base?

“First and foremost, I want to get to a place where this supports my family. After that, I want us to have a dedicated fan base that keeps us above the radar.”

If you’d have to compare your band to another one out there, living or dead, who would it be and why?

“Probably Curse the Black Sea. The singer and I favour somewhat.”

Which band/musician would you like to share many drinks with? What would you talk about?

“I’ve shared several cans of water with Korn. We talked about life, faith, family, and rock and roll.”
