Getting to Know: UK Post-Punk band, Darkbeat

Share

In today’s Getting to know, we meet UK post-punk quartet, Darkbeat. They take cues from Hüsker Dü and wouldn’t mind getting drunk with New Order’s Peter Hook. If you are in an up and coming band that would like to partake in a Getting to Know feature, contact editor@riffyou.com to receive the questionnaire and instructions. Thanks!

DB_TheEnterprise (40)_BWBand Name: Darkbeat
Band Members: Dolores Dark (vocals), FabD (bass), FrankD (guitar), and KekkoD (drums).
Years Active: 1
City of Origin: London, UK.

Who are you and what do you do?
“We are a four-piece post-punk outfit with a dark twist.”

In 100 words or less, tell us how your band has gotten to this point.
Dolores and I (FabD) met through an ad in November 2013. We started working on songs and then I asked my mate FrankD to join the band in March 2014. KekkoD joined Darkbeat in June this year, completing the current line-up. We all played in many different bands, but the past is the past and we’d rather talk about the present and the future with Darkbeat.”

What is your latest release and how would you best describe it to someone who hasn’t heard your band?
“We’re going to the recording studio in late November this year and then we’ll be releasing an EP with 4 songs, a 7” and a video. What you’re going to hear is an explosive cocktail of rough-edged fast-paced rock n’roll with a melodic core.”

When making an album, which aspect of the process do you put the most time into and why?
“Song writing, rehearsing and gigging is all we’ve been doing so far…we’ll let you know how the recording experience went later on…stay tuned.”

What is the best part about your band and why?
“First of all, we’re friends. We hang out together and love what we’re doing. We do work as a team and are business-like and professional off stage, but have a blast on stage. Overall, we’re having great fun!”

What makes your band unique from the rest?
“Unique is a big word…we’re not in that frame of mind. We’re just honest workers of the rock n’ roll scene. We’re real, believe in what we’re doing, and put 100% into it. Come to one of our gigs and you’ll see we mean business!”

How does your band survive the challenges of touring/gigging?
“We’re not at that stage yet, but loving what we’re doing and being organised can help us with those challenges.”

Would you rather be critically-acclaimed; rich and famous; or an under-the-radar band with a dedicated fan base?
“We’d love to be recognised for what we’re doing, which is making music we love for people to enjoy. We want to play in front of big audiences, because that’s the biggest thrill, ever, and if that brings extra perks along the way, let that be.”

If you’d have to compare your band to another one out there, living or dead, who would it be and why?
“I think that would be Hüsker Dü. We’re quite different in terms of sound, but I love their down to earth attitude and the mix of hardcore and melody they were able to achieve along the way. I love to think we’re walking along that path.”

Which band/musician would you like to share many drinks with? What would you talk about?
“Peter Hook (of Joy Division, New Order, as well as Peter Hook and the Light). We would get extremely drunk and talk rubbish.”
