While a big chunk of today’s metal circuit is filled with doom and gloom, there was a time where it was all dressed up in fluorescent spandex, big-book-of-hair-metal-smallwhite leather boots, eye shadow, and of course, hairspray. That time was the 1980s, and the scene was hair metal.

Set for release on August 15 through Voyageur Press, is The Big Book of Hair Metal: The Illustrated Oral History Of Heavy Metal’s Debauched Decade, “an all-encompassing oral history” of the sub-genre that brought metal to the mainstream.

Penned and compiled by heavy metal journalist Martin Popoff, the book reflects upon the era through previously unpublished quotes, anecdotes, photos (580, to be exact), and memorabilia, as well as observations from those who lived through an era where the party was just about as, if not more, important than the music.

Artists looked upon include Twisted Sister, Bon Jovi, Poison, Mötley Crüe, Ratt, Warrant, Great White, Whitesnake, Cinderella, Vixen, Skid Row, L.A. Guns, Guns N’ Roses, and dozens more.

Additionally, Popoff examines the factors that helped the hair metal scene rise, the bands who inspired it, as well as “the scenes that nurtured it.”

Now, baby…talk dirty to me.
