Stephen Colbert Sells Michael Stipe for 25 Cents

During the second to last episode of The Colbert Report last night, host Stephen Colbert took care of some housecleaning by 141218-michael-stipe-colbertselling off R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe at a garage sale for just a quarter

As you may recall, Colbert was so bothered by the 2011 breakup of R.E.M., that he put Stipe on his Shelves of Honour alongside a microwave from The O’Reilly Factor and a pack of Vasca-ginia Slims. Over the years, Stipe would make random appearances from his perch, one of which included a performance of “Lean on Me” with super-producer Brian Eno.

It remains unclear who took advantage of this bargain basement price, but chances are his or her music collection just got a hell of a lot better.

Tonight, The Colbert Report will air for the final time, as Colbert is set to replace David Letterman on The Late Show. We do not yet know if he’ll now be placed upon Stipe’s Shelves of Honour. He has to have his own, right?
