Weezer’s New Record will Sound Like Blue Album & Pinkerton Combined

In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly, Weezer have confirmed that their forthcoming album, Everything Will be weezer-everything-will-be-alright-in-the-end-smallAlright in the End, will be released on September 30. However, what may be more exciting to know is that the band – who have been the whipping boys of music critics for too many years to count – claim that this offering will sound like a combination of their most acclaimed statements, Blue Album and Pinkerton.

Says drummer Pat Wilson: “If you took the Pinkerton band and then play all the other records, that’s what we sound like now. Bombastic, loose, kind of booming. This record sounds like it’s going to have the tight structure of Blue Album with a little bit more abandon like Pinkerton.

The Cars’ Rick Ocasek has returned as Weezer’s producer, after turning the knobs on the aforementioned Blue Album, as well as 2001’s Green Album. Based on the strength of those recordings, one would think that his selection would’ve been a slam dunk. But, as Rivers Cuomo tells the publication, that was not the case.

“Ric wasn’t the obvious first choice for us,” says Cuomo. “It’s hard to even remember back to the beginning of 2013, but we weren’t sure of what we were doing or where we were going, and it was really helpful to talk to the other producers out there and get a feel for what it would be like to move in this direction or that direction. It all comes down to weighing our different values, like the sound and the vibe and the energy of where we came from that resonated with so many people and still feels so important and necessary—weighing that against the artist’s need to explore and try new things. In a way, it gets more complicated as your creative career develops, because you have all these different elements you need to maintain and keep integrated as you move forward. Eventually, as we meditated on all the different options, it dawned on us that the vibe we wanted and the sound we wanted and the energy we wanted, there was no one on earth who could get that better than Ric.”

As you may know, Weezer has recently been running a promotion called “Weezer Wednesday,” where the band takes the opportunity to share tidbits of the album to come. Today, we get to listen to a snippet of a new track titled “Return to Ithaca.”
