Jason Netherton, founding member of Maryland metal band Misery Index, is on the verge of dropping Extremity Retained: Notes extremity-retained-death-metal-smallFrom the Death Metal Underground, a 480-page non-fiction book that “is intended to capture the experience and ethos of the international death metal scene.”

Three years, and over 100 interviews later, the book will examine death metal’s late 1980s emergence, through “the successive incarnations and evolutions that made it the subcultural force it is today.”

Extremity Retained will feature first-hand stories, anecdotes and memories of those within the death metal community, with topics ranging from life on tour; to performance and technique; the tape trading culture; as well as regional ‘scene’ reports.

“Ultimately, the idea is to explore the scene through the voices of those who helped create it, in order to understand better how the death metal underground worked in its early incarnations, how it has evolved, and where it is going,” reads a press release introducing the book.

The book will debut at Concordia University’s extreme metal event, The Grimposium, from April 11-12. Subsequently, it’ll be available at Maryland Deathfest XII, and can be pre-ordered through Hanshake, Inc. The first 500 people to do the latter will receive a bonus Extremity Retained cassette compilation that consists of tracks by bands featured in the book.
