Jian Ghomeshi’s Former Bandmates Speak Out

Before Jian Ghomeshi became the host of CBC Radio program, Q, he was a member of the long-running satirical folk-pop band, cbc_jianghomeshi-394Moxy Früvous. Now, in the wake of allegations that Ghomeshi has committed acts of violence against women for a number of years, his former band has chosen to speak up.

Via an email forwarded to The Globe and Mail in Toronto on Friday, Moxy Früvous members Mike Ford, Murray Foster and David Matheson, offered this statement:

“As former colleagues of Jian (our last show was in 2000), we are sickened and saddened by this week’s news. We had no inkling that Jian engaged in this type of behaviour. We abhor the idea of a sexual relationship of any sort being entered into without full consent from both parties and condemn violence against women in any form. We wish only health and healing to everyone involved.”

Over the past week, a myriad of women – both anonymously and openly – have come forward with disturbing details regarding their dealings with Ghomeshi. Two women have now spoken with police and a criminal probe is now in motion.

Additionally, Canadian electro-pop star, Lights, has parted ways with Ghomeshi. He served as her manager for 12 years.

The day after Ghomeshi was fired from the CBC, Lights took to Facebook to defend her then business associate, but has since offered this statement:

“I posted comments about Jian Ghomeshi the day after he was dismissed by the CBC where I rushed to defend my manager of 12 years,” she explains. “I am now aware that my comments appear insensitive to those impacted and for that I am deeply sorry. This is to confirm that as of now I will be parting ways with Jian Ghomeshi as my manager. I hope everyone can heal from this.”

Last week, critically-acclaimed musician, Owen Pallett, offered the following: “Jian Ghomeshi is my friend, and Jian Ghomeshi beats women.”
