Watch Eddie Vedder Give Letterman Some “Better Man”

In 1996, Pearl Jam‘s Eddie Vedder made a tremendously memorable (and surprising!) appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman by performing a portion of “Black.” But, Vedder’s final gig for Letterman proved to be equally, if not more impressive.

Vedder, along with Paul Shaffer and The CBS Orchestra, put on a blaring, yet emotional version of “Better Man” off of Vitalogy. As the gig progressed, Vedder’s spirit went from that of reflective, to a man possessed. Through the closing run of the song, Vedder busted a string on his guitar and brought out his inner-Pete Townshend by pulling out the windmill.

Once finished, Vedder and Letterman shared a kind embrace and waved goodnight to the crowd. You can watch the full performance right here:
