Although alt-rock pioneers R.E.M. disbanded in 2011, their frontman Michael Stipe remains a celebrated vocal and creative force. Last night, again, he proved this by appearing on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon to perform a remarkable version of David Bowie’s “The Man Who Sold the World.”

“Right now, it feels as if the solar system is off its axis, as if one of our main planetary anchors has lost it’s orbit,” said Stipe at the time of Bowie’s passing. “That said—I am certain that wherever Bowie is now—I want to be there someday.”
