Dave Grohl Explains Letter to Ian MacKaye

Last week, the world got to see a handwritten note in which a teenaged Dave Grohl mailed off to Ian MacKaye (Fugazi, Minor Threat.) In a new interview with NME, the Foo Fighters frontman provided the back story.

Grohl explained that MacKaye is a meticulous collector that had recently stumbled across the letter while cleaning up his attic. Naturally, MacKaye then got in touch with Grohl about it.

Grohl went on to explain he was hoping that MacKaye’s Dischord Records could help his then band, Mission Impossible, release its demo tape. Suffice to say, that didn’t happen, even though the young Grohl gave MacKaye a phone number to call, as well as the hours in which he’d be home from school.

“I’m telling you, if the Foos could do a Dischord single,” said Grohl at the end of the interview clip, “then we could break up. Done deal.”

We think he’s kidding…
