NXNE to Host Lyric-Driven Visual Art Exhibit

As NXNE gets ready to take Toronto over next week, comes news that the festival will be hosting a July-Talk-Turf-1“collaborative art exhibit” called The One That Got Away. It’ll run from June 14-20 at Artscape Youngplace.

This unique event will feature visual art pieces that have been inspired by lyrics unused by an array of Canadian musicians like July Talk, Shad, Damian Abraham (of Fucked Up), Brendan Canning (of Broken Social Scene), Hollerado, Rich Aucoin, Max Kerman (Arkells), Liam Cormier (of Cancer Bats), plus a bunch more.

Curated by Tara Bartolini and Vanessa Heins, The One That Got Away will donate 50% of the proceeds generated from artwork sales to the Canadian charity, MusiCounts.

“Tara and I wanted to create a show that fused music and art together and approached each piece as a collaboration,” said Heins in a press release. “After personally working with many musicians during the ‘writing’ process, I was interested in the idea of words and lyrics that would not make it into a song and be abandoned, never turning into anything more. We thought it would be interesting to give these ‘orphan lyrics’ a new home by having visual artists use these as a springboard for inspiration, bringing new life into their words.”
